Spanish learning pill "Haya & Halla"

Haya

(Subjuntivo del verbo “haber”)

Cuando algo alcanzó su etapa de desarrollo.

Ej.: ¡No se desespere! Quizá haya alguna medicina alternativa para su mal.

Halla

(Del verbo “hallar”)

Encontrar algo o a alguien.

Ej.: Quien halla un amigo, halla un tesoro.

To be

(Subjunctive of the verb ‘haber’)

When something reaches its development stage.

Ex.: Don’t despair! Maybe there is some alternative medicine for her illness.

Find

(From the verb ‘hallar’)

To find something/someone.

Ex.: Who finds a friend, finds a treasure.

Most Spanish speakers pronounce these two words the same way, what makes it difficult for the students of Spanish to be able to differentiate easily between the two. This is called ‘yeísmo’, a phonetic phenomenon which consists on pronouncing the sound ‘LL’ as ‘Y’. If you can recognize both sounds, that’s perfect. But if you don’t, don’t be panic. Nowadays ‘yeismo’ is accepted in the formal rules of the Spanish language.

In order to make easier for people to recognize these two words, Latino Schools has prepared this Spanish pill so as to explain the most frequent doubts about the use of ‘Haya’ and ‘Halla’.

With the Word ‘Haya’ we can refer to a type of tree, but it can also be used as the first (‘yo’), second (‘usted’) or third person (‘el/ella’) of the subjunctive present tense of the verb ‘haber’ as a verb in an impersonal phrase or accompanied by a participle (so as to form the perfect subjunctive).

On the other hand, we use ‘Halla’ as the second (usted) and third person singular (‘él/ella’) of the present indicative of the verb ‘hallar’ or the second person singular of the imperative (‘tú’). In both cases, the word is associated with the discovering of something, the understanding of something or the finding of something or someone in a place.
