In the Survival Guide: banks and money we learned the different expressions used when in a bank or dealing with money, something extremely useful for our adventures in Quito, Cuzco or Sucre. We spoke a bit about how to pay and buy in a shop, but today we’ll dedicate our entire section to delve deeper into the matter of shopping. Whether in a supermarket, butchery, pharmacy, greengrocer or in a clothing store, there are few words and expressions we need to know.

First, a bit of basic vocabulary:

• Shop – Tienda
• Market – Mercado
• Supermarket – Supermercado
• Grocery store – Tienda de comestibles
• Bakery – Panadería
• Butchery – Carnicería
• Fish shop – Pescadería
• Greengrocer – Frutería
• Pharmacy – Farmacia

The main verb we use when shopping is: comprar (to buy).

When looking for a product

Whatever the type of shop you enter into, you’ll need to know some phrases to ask when looking for something (in case you don’t see it right away).

– Excuse me, where is the…? – Disculpe, ¿dónde está el/la…?

– Excuse me, do you have…? – Disculpe, ¿tienen…?

In case they don’t have → You know where can I find it? – ¿Sabe dónde puedo encontrarlo/la?

In a Pharmacy

I’m not feeling so well – No me encuentro muy bien

I have a sore throat – Me duele la garganta

I have a headache – Me duele la cabeza

I have stomach ache – Me duele el estómago

I have a cold/the flu – Estoy resfriado / tengo la gripe

What shall I take? – ¿Qué debería tomar?Every how much time? – ¿Cada cuánto tiempo?

For how long? – ¿Durante cuánto tiempo?

Do you have this medicine…? – ¿Tienen esta medicina?

I have this recipe the doctor gave me– El doctor me dio esta receta

When buying

Who is the last in line? – ¿Quién es el/la último/a?

Hello, good morning – Hola, buenos días.

Good morning sir, madam. What do you wish? – Buenos días señor/señora. ¿Qué desea?

I’d like one/two/three…of… – Quiero uno, dos, tres de…

I’d like 100/200/500 grams of…- Quiero 100/200/500 gramos de…

How much does it cost? – ¿Cuánto cuesta?

Can I pay by credit card? – ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta?

Thank you so much – Muchas gracias

When in a clothing store

I saw this item of clothing on your website, do you have it in this shop? – He visto esta prenda de ropa en su web, ¿la tienen en esta tienda?

I cannot find my size – No puedo encontrar mi talla

Do you have the size….? – ¿Tienen la talla….?

It’s too big/small – Es demasiado grande/pequeño

What is it made of? – ¿De qué material está hecho?

This is expensive/cheap – Esto es caro/barato

This is for free – Esto es gratis

Can I help you? – ¿Le puedo ayudar?

I’m just looking, thanks – Solo estoy mirando, gracias

Can I have a bag? – ¿Me puede dar una bolsa?

What is it made of? – ¿De qué material está hecho?

Do you have a smaller/larger size? – ¿Tiene una talla más grande/más pequeña?

This clothing is defective – Esta prenda tiene una tara

I’d like to return this clothing – Me gustaría devolver esta prenda de ropa

How many days do I have to return this clothing? – ¿Cuántos días tengo para devolver esta prenda?

If I return the clothing back, will I get a refund or you give me a ticket to buy another thing? – Si devuelvo esta prenda, ¿me harán un reembolso o un ticket para comprar otra cosa?

I have this event, what do you advice me to wear? – Tengo este evento. ¿Qué me aconseja que me ponga?
